The ICN Network

The Walsh Bay redevelopment project in Sydney is a grand scale project tasked to revitalise one of the most culturally significant precincts on the Australian arts and live performance scene. The precinct consists of a network of wharves, piers and warehouses dating back 100 years, many in a state of decline and requiring an architectural and networking overhaul to house Australia’s more prestigious theatre, dance and symphonic companies. The redevelopment extended beyond providing world class performance venues and auditorium facilities for globally reputed performance troupes to ensure a visitor experience including the visual and audio encounters exceeded global expectations.

The project was awarded to Richard Crookes Construction. Richard Crookes Construction engaged Fredon Industries as the contractor for the electrical, communication, HVAC, audio visual and security packages.

Through years of successful relationship and project management collaboration, Fredon turned to Optical Solutions Australia; OSA, to design, build and supply the ICN network across the development as a plug and play solution. OSA is the only organisation with the expertise and engineering skill sets to deliver on communications, racking and build an ICN network meeting all the complexities of the Walsh Bay redevelopment project.

Not without its challenges

The ICN network build was a complex design. The project encountered a number of variables within the multi layered construction incorporating an expanded portfolio of sub sections and building management systems (BMS) across a variety of tenant requirements and architectural complexities.

The network needed to deliver full scale CCTV, Access Control Points, emergency lighting, solar systems, internal and external lighting control, audio visual subsystems, paging systems, staging communications, architectural and theatrical lighting, holistic wireless connections and intercom.

The network design and build required extensive tenant consultation taking in consideration of the nuances and technical requirements of each tenant with added attention to the visitor experience. The build faces further challenges due to the advent of Covid-19 and the travel restrictions applied meant our engineers needed to assemble a highly secure remote access portal to replace onsite visitation. Additional architectural variations to the building’s layouts added unforeseen obstructions that required fast troubleshooting techniques to keep the projects forward momentum to meet the tenant’s timeframe expectations.

The system was designed, built and tested in the OSA laboratory at our Brisbane facility. Our team had the necessary experience, engineering skills and resources to complete the project off site and deliver to Fredon a ready to install turnkey plug and play solution. The Brisbane facility is a large purpose built laboratory hosting OSA highly experienced engineering team. It is here that much of the research and design development for OSA projects takes place. It is this level of capability and network engineering expertise that enables us to build the network hardware, test it, and ship it for a convenient end user installation that keeps OSA ahead of the competition and provides the turnkey solution packages for projects such as the Walsh Bay Redevelopment.

The ICN Network

The ICN network installed at Walsh Bay is a high speed state of the art network consisting of 10 Gigabit per second links between the latest technology Aruba (HPE) switches.

In addition to the switching infrastructure there is a world leading Aruba wireless network throughout the site.

The ICN network silently underpins the entire site.
