The “Digital Disrupters” of Super Fast Broadband Infrastructure - Fibercorp, Calix and OSA

How does Fibercorp succeed in delivering Superfast Broadband Infrastructure at speeds that are up to hundreds of times faster than the NBN Co?

According to Fibercorp CEO, Sam Scoutas, the secret to their success is their fibre optic backbone…and their technology partnership with Calix and OSA.

“The partnership between Fibercorp and OSA has cemented Fibercorp’s entry and immediate competitiveness in the Australian carrier space.

By adopting telco technology currently used in the USA and offered exclusively by OSA,  Fibercorp was able to build a core network design complimented by the Calix activewear to become a recognised alternative to NBN Co.

This enabled Fibercorp to lead the way for fixed internet speeds in the wholesale marketplace, as well as offering the fastest speeds available via its participating retailers in the residential marketplace.

OSA brings a wealth of knowledge and support to its product set, giving Fibercorp the comfort that it can rely on OSA’s years of experience and technical engineering wherever needed.

The partnership between OSA and Fibercorp transcends technology hardware…both organisations are aligned to achieve the goal of disrupters in the super-fast carrier space in Australia.”

Delivering internet speed capability up to 100 times faster than the NBN Co

Fibercorp is the only Australian privately-owned superfast carrier that adheres to NBN legislation with regard to hardware and design standards, and Fibercorp’s core infrastructure is the same brand as the NBN Co.

However, unlike the NBN Co, Fibercorp’s core business model is to take the fibre network all the way to the premise, and they use Calix active ware. These points of difference enable Fibercorp to deliver internet speed capability that is up to 10 times faster than the highest plan currently offered by NBN Co; within 12 months will be up to 20 times faster; and within 36 months, will be up to 100 times faster…all without changing the hardware.

“We started Fibercorp with the intent to be a digital disruptor, and give the industry a kick in the pants,” says Sam. “We wanted to be the fastest wholesale carrier in Australia and we have already achieved this, working with Calix and OSA to offer up to 10 gig capability in projects around the country. We are currently working on an initiative with Brisbane City Council which will provide up to 10GB for businesses.

And now we are about to embark on a groundbreaking new development with Calix and OSA, utilising these fibre optic technologies to provide unprecedented internet speed capabilities and cutting-edge smart home automation in a MDU residential building.”

Creating a fully integrated MDU residential fibre network

Marsden Central, in Sydney’s north-west, will be the first Australian development to offer Calix internet and high-end smart home technology as standard inclusions.

This means that in addition to smart home automation, each home will also have an internet speed capability that is up to 100 times faster than the highest plan currently offered by the NBN Co!

Residents will enjoy the latest in Urnet residential security; the ability to access services such as free to air and satellite TV; and Fibaro smart home automation…

…all delivered over a singular fibre network, and all operated by a single touch of a button of their smart device or phone.

Future-proofing the access network

The future-proofed access network that underlies this smart technology and internet speed capability is the same Calix hardware that has been used by tier-one telcos for some time to connect over 23 million people to superfast fibre services in the USA.

And according to Calix’s regional sales director, Craig Stephens, it’s time Australia caught up.

“There is a complete misalignment with Australia from the rest of the world when it comes to internet speeds.  As we all connect to the Internet of Things, subscribers are placing much more demand on service providers with gaming, working from home, video streaming and uploading large files. We need to build a foundation but there’s not a lot of foresight when it comes to infrastructure.

“OSA was one of the first companies in Australia to introduce GPON technology to the mining industry in volume deployments. OSA and Fiber Corp are completely aligned with Calix’s strategy to challenge, develop and influence the industry over the medium to long-term.”

Delivering large scale GPON projects

For Fibercorp’s CIO, Joel Clarke, OSA’s proven track record of delivering large scale GPON projects was the reason they chose to partner with OSA and Calix for Mardsen Central and their other MDU residential fibre network projects.

“Having worked closely with OSA over the past 6 years they have a proven track record of delivering large scale GPON projects in line with expectations and above and beyond in terms of customer service and support,” says Joel.

“Calix was an obvious choice as our preferred GPON vendor as they are supported throughout Australia by OSA’s knowledgeable engineers and technicians who provide a wealth of local knowledge, and the Marsden Central project demonstrates how forward-thinking property developers assure new developments in Australia is not left behind when it comes to technology.

OSA’s experience in GPON networks is assisting Fibercorp in not only deploying a 10 Gigabit-capable XGSPON/NGPON2 network, but also the most advanced layer 2 wholesale access network in Australia by automating provisioning, support and customer service improving overall customer service and reducing network deployment and management costs.

By automating much of the network, OSA and Calix have enabled Fibercorp to pre-connect ISPs and users, saving between 14-30 days for new customers who would typically be waiting for NBN Co connectivity as well as significantly reducing new service faults currently experienced by over 25% of all NBN Co users to under 1%.”

Continuing to challenge the industry

“As the reliance on technology is ever increasing the need for faster and more reliable networks is ongoing,” says Joel. “Together, OSA, Calix and Fibercorp understand the need to be responsive and innovative to market trends and by working closely with the product vendor this assures our network and the future Calix products remains at the forefront of innovation.”

“We know we can always rely on OSA because OSA are not a box dropper,” says Sam. “OSA have always assisted Fibercorp in helping manage stock on hand.

“Whenever we need something at the drop of a hat we always know it’s going to be there on time, with the quality guaranteed.”

Craig from Calix agrees. “OSA has been our exclusive partner for GPON technology since 2011, representing Calix throughout Australia for both business and residential networks.

OSA are very technical and professional in how they approach their customers, and all of the OSA state managers are very well respected in the industry.

This is a very important relationship we want to continue, because not only does OSA help build future-proofed fibre, but they stay in touch with what’s going on in other parts of the world.”

In fact, according to Sam, Fibercorp’s mission to shake up, wake up and disrupt Superfast Broadband Infrastructure in Australia, is made possible by their partnership with Calix and OSA.
