OSA for a sustainable future

Buildings surrounded with trees, Environmental technology concept

OSA works to ensure a sustainable future for all Australians. Sustainability and social responsibility are key elements driving our mission to bring connectivity and the benefits of digitalisation to everyone.

Along with Hexatronic, OSA believes a digital society is a more sustainable society.

OSA is committed to delivering cutting-edge fibre optic solutions and CCTV infrastructure that help contribute to a more sustainable society; how we run our company and do business matter. We are proud of the commitment and drive of our personnel in contributing to positive development.

Fibre optics fibre ends cables

Sustainable fibre to the home

OSA’s unique partnership with world-leading fibre optic manufacturing companies such as Hexatronic is a testament to our commitment to a sustainable future. Hexatronic leads the industry in its commitment to finding sustainable fibre optic solutions that have far-reaching benefits for industry, customers and society in general.

OSA and Hexatronic continue to explore sustainable solutions. A significant focus on miniaturising products, employing recycled materials and running production facilities on renewable energy have enabled Hexatronic to greatly reduce its carbon footprint.

Hexatronic has developed a carbon footprint calculator, giving the business a deeper understanding of its products’ environmental impact. These insights steer product development in a better direction and assist their customers in making more sustainable decisions.

A comparison study proves sustainable actions

Hexatronic compared three pairs of solutions for fibre access, including cables and matching ducts. Each pair’s capacity or fibre count was constant, whereas the dimensions and material composition differed. The assessors performed the calculations in a cradle-to-gate scenario.

Relevant data included extraction of raw materials, transports, energy usage for manufacturing and cable drums. Assessors imported the data to a life cycle assessment (LCA) calculation tool. The results proved that by utilising recycled materials in manufacturing, the company had found a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative without compromising on quality or performance.

Assessors started with the 192 fibre solutions, a capacity suitable for metro and core networks. They compared a 20/16 mm Microduct of virgin material coupled with a 192 fibre loose tube cable to a 12/8 mm Microduct of recycled material with a 192f Viper Slim. The result showed a reduction in the carbon footprint of the more sustainable solution of 42%.

The assessors made the same comparison for distribution network solutions with a capacity of 24 fibres. They compared a 14/12 mm Microduct of virgin material coupled with a 24 fibre micro cable to a 7/4 mm Microduct of recycled material with a 24f Stingray. The carbon footprint of the more sustainable solution decreased by 72% in comparison.

In the third study, Hexatronic compared drop network solutions, used to connect each subscriber to the FTTH network. Assessors compared a 14/10 mm Microduct of virgin material coupled with a 12 fibre drop cable to a 5/2.5 mm Microduct of recycled material with a 12f Stingray. Reducing the size and using recycled materials resulted in a carbon footprint reduction of 78%. Drop connections are usually the largest part of an FTTH network, which gives significant potential to impact the total carbon footprint of the project.

Minimising product size makes a difference

Minimising product size is also a contributing factor to Hexatronic’s sustainability commitment. Technical developments have helped overcome many technical barriers in fibre optical technology, enabling the use of slimmer fibre in Hexatronic cables.

Fibres with a diameter of 250 microns can be replaced with 200 microns or even 190 micron fibres. Slimmer fibres give slimmer cables and, in turn, the option of slimmer ducts.

When producing a slimmer duct, we need less material production, and with smaller sizes, transportation decreases. The added benefits of slimmer products being more accessible to install and handle are a welcome bonus to this advancement in production.

Maximising recycled materials and renewable energy

Virgin material used in Hexatronic products accounted for a significant part of the company’s total emissions. Hexatronic now replaces virgin material with recycled material wherever possible. The company selects the material used for the recycled ducts to provide the same quality and life span as the virgin material. We source material from products brought back from the field by our installers, leftover material from production and selected high-grade and quality-controlled post-consumer material from a single source.

Using high-quality recycled materials significantly contributes to carbon reduction, especially at scale. Using every piece of leftover duct in production, whatever the colour, Hexatronic can give the material a new life as recycled ducts. This mix of colours results in a greener black duct with a significantly lower carbon footprint than ducts made of virgin material.

By replacing oil-based polymers with bio-based plastic, Hexatronic finds further sustainable solutions. Bio-based plastics are made from crops, a renewable resource. The production of bio-based plastics results in lower greenhouse gas emissions than oil-based plastics by using less energy during production, and the feedstocks absorb carbon dioxide during growth. The products can store carbon dioxide, creating a negative carbon footprint.

All three of Hexatronic’s European production sites run on renewable energy: Hexatronic in Sweden, Austria and the Netherlands exclusively use hydropower, wind energy, solar energy and bioenergy.

OSA is proud to partner with companies such as Hexatronic, which continually challenge the status quo for renewable, sustainable and environmental solutions that reduce carbon emissions through minimisation, recycling and using renewable energy. Through thoughtful collaborations with customers and suppliers, OSA strives for a better digital world where everybody and everything has a brighter, more connected and sustainable future.

OSA offers competitive pricing and fast delivery to large and small businesses, government agencies, commercial and industrial developers, councils and municipalities.
