Allianz Stadium Project

The Allianz Stadium in Moore Park is a major piece of sporting infrastructure. Located next to the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground, Allianz Stadium replaced the old Sydney Football Stadium built in 1988.

The whole project required demolishing the old facility and rebuilding a new state-of-the-art, technologically advanced stadium accommodating crowds of over 40,000 people.

The project builder, John Holland Group, engaged Fredon as the electrical and communication contractor for the building works. After an exhaustive tender process, OSA was contracted to supply the structured cabling and cabinets with cold aisle containment.

This large-scale project comprised 306km of CommScope Cat6A FUTP copper cable, 38km of 24 core single-mode fibre, and 11,556 Cat6A FUTP RJ45 jacks.

OSA is the supplier of choice for large-scale networking projects

It was a massive undertaking and the importance of the networking and communications infrastructure is highly visible with sporting events being telecast across the country and worldwide. We understood the pressure and our expertise in supplying state of the art communications hardware was clearly on show.

This project was another example of why OSA has been consistently awarded the supplier of choice for major projects across Australia. Projects including the Walsh Bay Redevelopment in Sydney, network solutions for the EastLink tollway in Melbourne, The Manuka Oval media and function centre in Canberra, structured cabling and fibre optic network infrastructure for the Western Sydney Stadium, and the build of the new Allianz Stadium are a handful of examples that showcase OSA’s capability for large infrastructure project.

Our team has the expertise to analyse a project’s challenges and successfully plan the objectives from timeline to infrastructure and logistics.

OSA resolves problems and plans meticulously

“When tackling large infrastructure projects, rarely does a day go by where I am not trying to resolve an issue. These can be unforeseen structural obstacles, supply chain or workforce problems, or design anomalies. A problem we encountered with this project was the installation of the cold aisle containment in the main communications room. This was a design issue that needed OSA’s expertise to resolve,” said Hussan Ali, Project Director at Fredon.

OSA’s team went to work resolving this problem for Fredon. OSA’s ingenuity in solving problems is one reason why large companies like Fredon have confidence in OSA.

“When we encountered the problem with the cold aisle containment, we expected a substantial delay. Delays feed down the line to other trades, negatively impacting timelines, however, OSA delivered on time.

OSA is very reliable with its commitments; its ability to access unforeseen problems and find solutions is a strength of the OSA team and is why we choose OSA for complex projects.

OSA has extensive experience scheduling large-scale projects; however, supply obstacles and downsized port capabilities due to COVID-19 further complicated this project. The OSA team worked exceptionally hard on managing the logistics to ensure the integrity of the construction timeline was not compromised.

OSA plans meticulously. There are many balls in the air, and I need a business that is switched on and can plan autonomously. OSA is exceptional with its ability to have the materials and team ready to deliver at very short notice. Often we have a narrow window of 24-48 hours to get the OSA team on site with the required hardware to do a section of the installation. OSA never failed to deliver, and its stock inventory, warehousing and logistics infrastructure, and its human capital make my job so much easier,” said Hussan.

Big Empty stadium

Allianz Stadium is up and running

The project was 18 months in the making. With approximately 1200 people working on the site, it was a major showcase for the city of Sydney. There is zero tolerance for communication and security infrastructure failure. The first public test of the facility took place on August 28th, with the Sydney Roosters playing the Sydney Rabbitohs, followed by the Australian Wallabies versus the South African Springboks the next day. With big crowds and the games televised across the country and internationally, both events went without a hitch.

“You can’t help but take a deep breath when the project goes live. To see the stadium full and every piece of our puzzle working at its optimum was a great feeling. OSA was instrumental in Fredon meeting its objectives and delivering on its commitment. I have full confidence in OSA’s abilities and look forward to working with them again,” said Hussan.
